FAQ's

Q: Will the new wireless system work with my existing computer?
A: Yes - If your existing computer meets the following requirements:
a. Operating System - You system must be running Microsoft Windows 98SE or
later, or Macintosh OS 8.5 or later. This includes Windows 98SE, Windows
XP, Windows Me, and Windows 2000. Note that Windows 95 is NOT supported.

b. Memory - Your system MUST HAVE at least 256MB of RAM. To find out how much
Memory your system has, right click on: My Computer, then choose
Properties.; If you do not have at least 256MB, then you must add
additional RAM. (The more, the better.)

c. Network Card - The wireless modem connects to your computer through your
computer's Network Card. This should be installed and available in advance of ordering the wireless modem.

Q: How fast will my connection be?
A: Three wireless systems have been installed in Nahunta. One is for small businesses
and residential customers, and will support speeds up to 2.0 Mbps. This is more than twice
as fast as the telephone company's DSL offering. The second system is for commercial
business and will handle speeds up to 10.0 Mbps. The third system is Brantley County School Systems private wireless network. The standard subscriber packages are explained in more detail on the Services Page. Customized packages are also available. Please note that individual connection speeds, however, will vary depending upon a number of factors, including: how far you live from the transmission tower, whether or not you have an indoor or outdoor antenna, whether or not you live in a low area, and whether or not your house or business is surrounded by a large number of trees. A Coastal Broadband Technician will conatact you to verify that the speed requested is obtainable at your location.
Q: What hardware do I need to install the service?
A: You need a wireless modem and along with associated cables provided by Coastal Broadband. In addition, your computer will need a standard Network (Ethernet) Card. The Network Card costs less than $20 and can be purchased from any local computer store or online from a variety of sources.
In addition, if you live outside the City Limits or live in a heavily wooded area, you may need an outdoor antenna. Coastal Broadband can provide you additional information
about the need for outdoor antennas.
Q: What if I need help with installation?
A: The modem, cables, outdoor antenna, and Network Card are fairly simple to
install; however, if you do need help, instructions will be included with the
modem package. Please note, however, that there will be additional charges should
you require on-site assistance with equipment installation. Call the office @ 462-8200 to discuss the cost of an outdoor antenna etc.
Q. I understand that several types of receiving antennas are available.
What's the difference?

A: Yes, there are three basic types of receiving antennas. The first is a standard,
indoor antenna about the size of a person's hand. This antenna is used for those
locations within, say, a couple of miles from the transmitting antenna. The
second is an outdoor grid antenna for those locations further away
from the transmitting antenna where the signal is weaker. The third is the Coastal Broadband designed Panamodem with POE (power over ethernet). This antenna is designed for those distant or heavily wooded locations where extra gain is needed. Coastal Broadband will assist with the installation; however, additional costs typically apply for on-site assistance and extra eqpuipment required for connection.
Q: What happens if I have trouble once the modem and antenna are installed?
A: Your package will contain a toll-free, 1-866 number to call assistance (1-866-294-2600). This
service will be able to help you with most problems and arrange for local support, if necessary.

Reception and Antenna Placement

Q: I understand that the new wireless system "talked" through trees, but I'm told that trees are a factor in my getting a good signal. Why?
A: The new system does "talk" through trees; however, there are limitations,
especially the greater the distance from the tower. It is always preferable to place your antenna where it has the best chance of "seeing" the transmitting antenna on the tower. This can typically be accomplished with the indoor antenna. However, you may require the external, high-gain antenna that must be mounted on a pole or existing TV antenna pole. We use a small arm similar to the common dish antenna when possible. In any case, additional cables may be required to connect the antenna.

Q: Does it matter where I place my antenna?
A: Yes, absolutely. If you have an internal antenna, it needs to be placed (preferably)
in a location facing the transmission tower. For example, this could be in a room near a window on the side of the house or business that faces the tower. If the signal is too weak to connect, an external high-gain antenna must be used.
Q: I live in a mobile home. Will my reception be okay?
A: Like any RF or radio signal, the wireless system is indeed affected by metal; therefore,
it is highly probable that if you live in a mobile home, you will have to place the antenna in a window facing the transmission tower, or you will have to use an external antenna.
Q: I live four or five miles from the tower. Will I be able to get reception?
A: Again, depending on the factors mentioned previously, there is a reasonable chance that you will have an acceptable signal if you use an external antenna and mount it above tree level facing the transmission tower. Coastal Broadband currently has a cutomer that is located 9.75 miles from the tower using our newly designed Panamodem.
Q: I live in heavy woods. Will I be able to receive a signal?
A: If you live close to the transmission tower, yes, you will receive a signal.
However, each installation is different. A Coastal Broadband technician will test for signal strength. Once again, using an external antenna greatley increases your chances.
